Cell Therapy Downstream Processing

Processes for downstream purification of advanced cell therapies differ dramatically from other biologics. Our cell therapy solutions can help you successfully execute the complex steps required to obtain the final cell dose within the required quality parameters.

To meet the demands of higher upstream titers and large-scale production, our downstream processing lab advances purification technologies, develops new products to enhance productivity and delivers tailored solutions to resolve customers’ downstream bottlenecks.

Downstream development engineers optimize a chromatography process.

The downstream processing lab develops new solutions for the efficient purification of mAbs, recombinant proteins and plasmid DNA for cell and gene therapy applications. Leveraging deep expertise in a range of purification techniques, the labs also collaborate with customers to simulate their bioprocess workflows to streamline production, solve bottlenecks and identify tailored strategies to optimize the use of Avantor products.

Optimizing virus inactivation

Historically, virus inactivation during bioprocessing has relied on Triton X-100, a detergent now facing increasing regulatory and environmental compliance restrictions. Beyond compliance concerns, downstream yield and process efficiency can also be compromised by the extra steps required for transferring virus inactivation solutions and optimizing mixing.

To address these challenges, Avantor has developed innovative products and processes that simplify and strengthen this critical step:

  • Novel viral inactivation solution – a biodegradable alternative to Triton X-100 that delivers effective virus removal while meeting regulatory and sustainability expectations.
  • Avantor Magnetic Mixing System – a custom-configured platform designed to operate under diverse customer process conditions, improving consistency, reducing process time and preserving yield.
